Development

After lowering the fill opacity completely I was shocked to find this underlying grid, star-type structure formed completely from overlapping lines. What I really liked about this was the complex shape formed completely from perpendicular lines overlapping each other. I decided to try and expand on this idea of creating one type of form out of another using this as the base to work from for my final compositions.

Ultimately I decided that the colours in my structure served no real purpose so I removed them and got to see what the structure looked like built up with just black and white shades. As I increased the fill opacity I noticed a kind of corridor effect start to come into play, based on the order that each of the initial grid structures were drawn.

I finally figured out how to recreate the effect for all four corners of my canvas using code. I continued to experiment with colour and stroke/fill weight.

After coming up with my initial base structure I spent some time figuring out how to create the same effect in reverse using code. I also experimented with line weight and fill colour/opacity.

This is the initial structure I came up with in code. It's based on a simple grid algorithm and combined with the opacity of each of the individual grids being drawn over the top of each other created a nice gradient-type effect.

I think pattern is a form of structure. Patterns can't exist without parts relating to each other in some form of structure, however structure can exist without a set pattern of repeating elements.

Pattern

noun

  • 1 a repeated decorative design:an arrangement or design regularly found in comparable objects:2 a regular and intelligible form or sequence discernible in the way in which something happens or is done

I see structure as being a variable, everything has it to a certain degree because everything relates to each other in some way. Even random noise has structure, albeit very little, even if its just due to the constraints of it's display.

Structure
noun
the arrangement of and relations between the parts or elements of something complex:
- verb
[with object]
  • construct or arrange according to a plan; give a pattern or organization to:
